Towing an RV Over Colorado Mountain Passes: The Brake Homework to Do First

Colorado grades punish brakes that felt fine at sea level. How to weigh your rig, set trailer brake gain, and descend a 6% pass without cooking the drums.

You can tow a 32-foot travel trailer around Texas or Florida for five years and never really learn what your brakes do. Colorado teaches you in about eight miles. If this is your first summer hauling a trailer or driving a motorhome over the Front Range, the work that keeps you safe happens weeks before the trip — at a scale house, under a brake drum, and in your brake controller settings. Here's what actually matters, and what to check before you point the rig west.

The grades are longer than you think, and length is the problem

Colorado's descents aren't steeper than what you've seen elsewhere. They're just relentless. Westbound I-70 out of the Eisenhower Tunnel drops down Straight Creek toward Silverthorne at roughly 6–7% for six-plus miles. Eastbound, you come off the tunnel and give it all back through Georgetown and Floyd Hill. US 40 over Berthoud Pass, Wolf Creek's 6.8% run down the west side, and US 550 over Red Mountain Pass — narrow, switchbacked, and thin on guardrails — all ask for the same thing: sustained braking, not one hard stop.

That distinction is everything. A brake system converts your rig's motion and elevation into heat. Drop 3,000 vertical feet with 14,000 pounds behind you and that heat has to go somewhere. Brakes don't fail from a single panic stop; they fail from continuous light pressure that never lets the drums cool. As drums heat, they expand away from the shoes, friction material glazes, and in a hydraulic system the fluid can boil and put air in the line. The pedal goes long, then soft. That's fade, it's cumulative, and it happens fastest on the rigs whose owners are trying hardest to be careful by riding the brake.

Weigh the rig before you trust the brochure

Find a CAT scale and weigh loaded exactly as you'll travel — full fresh water (8.3 lb per gallon; a 60-gallon tank is 500 pounds), full propane, everything in the basement. Get individual axle weights, not just a total.

Then compare against three numbers: each axle's GAWR, the trailer's GVWR, and your tow vehicle's GCWR minus passengers, hitch, and cargo. Brakes are engineered for GVWR with no bonus margin. An overloaded rig on flat highway just wears things out early; the same rig on a six-mile 6% grade is where you discover the shortfall. Tongue weight should land near 10–15% of trailer weight on a bumper pull, 15–25% of the pin on a fifth wheel — too light and you'll fight sway on the descent, which usually gets "solved" with more brake.

Set your brake controller with the 25 mph test

Most owners set gain once at the dealer and never touch it again. Do this on a dry, level, empty road: get to 20–25 mph, then apply only the manual lever on the controller — no foot brake. Raise the gain until the trailer brakes grab just short of lockup, then back it off a notch. Redo it whenever the load changes meaningfully, and again after a mountain trip, because magnets wear.

For mountains you want the trailer carrying its full share rather than shoving the tow vehicle down the hill. The manual lever is also your tool for settling a sway that starts on a descent: a light trailer-only application straightens the rig, where hitting the foot brake can make it worse.

While you're in there, test the breakaway battery. It's a small sealed 12V cell that has to hold the trailer brakes for about 15 minutes if the trailer ever separates, and a huge share of them are dead by year three. With the trailer hitched and chocked, pull the pin and confirm the wheels lock, then reinsert it immediately — don't leave it out and drain the cell.

Descend in the gear you'd need to climb it

Downshift before the grade, not partway down it. Tow/haul mode, a manual gear selection, and an exhaust brake on a diesel all do the same job: hold your speed with the driveline so the friction brakes stay cool. Pick a speed you're comfortable maintaining and a gear that holds it with your foot off the pedal. If you're gaining speed in that gear, you're in too high a gear.

When you do need the brakes, snub them: one firm application to drop 5–8 mph below your target, then fully release for 30–60 seconds so the drums shed heat. Repeat as needed. Steady light pressure is the one technique that reliably cooks a brake system. Watch your transmission and coolant temps on the climb, too — pull into a chain-up area and idle if either climbs. And if the pedal ever goes soft, use a runaway ramp. They're free, they're there for exactly this, and using one is a good decision, not an embarrassment.

Know which brakes you have, because they behave differently. Electric drums are the norm and fade the most. Electric-over-hydraulic disc setups shed heat far better. Surge (hydraulic) brakes, common on smaller trailers, fade worst of all and can't be pre-applied from the cab at all.

The pre-trip inspection that catches most of it

Two weeks out, not the night before — parts take time to arrive.

  • Pull at least one drum per axle. Shoes under about 1/16 inch of friction material are done. Look for scored drums, blue heat marks, a cracked or grooved magnet face, and any grease on the linings, which means a leaking inner seal and a brake that needs full replacement, not cleaning.
  • Check magnet draw. A healthy 12V electric brake magnet pulls roughly 3 amps; a four-brake tandem should land near 10–12 amps at full gain. Low readings usually mean a corroded ground or a worn magnet.
  • Inspect and repack wheel bearings annually or about every 12,000 miles. A hub that's noticeably hotter than its mates after a highway run is a bearing problem, and a bearing failure on a pass is a far worse day than a brake one.
  • Adjust the star wheels if your axles aren't self-adjusting — snug until the drum drags, then back off until it turns freely.
  • Tow vehicle: brake fluid that's dark is moisture-loaded and boils sooner; flush it on schedule. Check pads, rotors, and the trailer plug's pins.
  • Tires and cold pressure, set by actual axle weight. Heat is what takes RV tires out, and mountain summer pavement is no gentler than August heat on the flats.

When to call a pro

Get a technician on it before you leave if the rig pulls to one side under braking, if there's a burning smell or smoke after a descent, if a hub is too hot to hold your hand near, if the pedal travels farther than it used to, if the controller reports a short or an open circuit, or if you find grease anywhere on a brake shoe. Bearing repacks, seal replacement, magnet and shoe work, and electric-over-hydraulic actuator diagnosis are all jobs where "close enough" isn't a category.

FAQ

Does every axle need brakes? Colorado requires brakes on trailers over 3,000 pounds GVWR, and thresholds vary by state — but for mountain towing, brakes on every axle isn't a legal question, it's a stopping-distance one.

Can I get engine braking out of a gas motorhome? Not the way a diesel with an exhaust brake can. Use tow/haul and select a lower gear manually; a gas V8 still holds a meaningful amount of speed at higher RPM, but plan on a slower descent speed.

How hot is too hot? Use an infrared thermometer at the bottom of a long grade. Hubs should read within roughly 50°F of each other. It's the outlier that matters — one hub much hotter than the rest points at a dragging brake or a failing bearing, and that rig shouldn't take another pass.

Should I disconnect and drive the pass unloaded first? Not necessary if your maintenance is current and your weights are legal. Do it when you're unsure about the tow vehicle's cooling, and plan the trip around daylight and weather instead.
