RV Tire Blowouts Peak in August: The Heat Math and the Checks That Prevent One
August pavement is the hottest of the year, and heat is what actually blows RV tires — how to set cold pressure by weight, read a date code, and catch a failure early.

Ask any mobile RV tech which month keeps them busiest on the roadside and you'll hear the same answer: right now. Late July through early September is blowout season, and the tires that come apart are almost never the bald ones. They're tires with plenty of tread, on a rig that towed fine all spring, that let go at 70 mph in Arizona at three in the afternoon.
That is not bad luck. It's physics, and most of it is preventable in an hour in your driveway.
Why heat, not tread, is what blows an RV tire
Nearly every catastrophic RV tire failure is a heat failure, and it follows the same chain every time. A tire carrying more weight than its inflation pressure supports flexes farther in the sidewall on every single rotation. That flexing generates internal friction. The friction generates heat. Heat degrades the bond between the steel belts and the surrounding rubber, the belts begin to separate, and eventually the tire comes apart — usually at speed, usually with no warning noise beforehand.
Tread depth barely enters into it. You can blow a tire with 90 percent of its tread remaining, and people do, constantly.
August stacks every variable against you at once. Asphalt in Phoenix, Yuma, Bakersfield, or west Texas routinely sits at 130 to 150°F in the afternoon when the air temperature is only 105. Your tire starts hot before it turns a single revolution, and running temperature climbs from there. Meanwhile the rig is loaded heavier than it was in April — full fresh tank, a summer's worth of gear, maybe bikes on the back.
Speed is the multiplier. Heat generation rises steeply with road speed, which is why Special Trailer (ST) tires — what's under most travel trailers and fifth wheels — have traditionally carried a 65 mph speed rating. Some newer ST tires are rated to 75, but typically only at full cold inflation and sometimes with a load reduction. Check the sidewall and the maker's chart instead of assuming. On a 108-degree afternoon, 62 mph and 78 mph are genuinely different risk categories.
Set cold pressure for the weight you're actually carrying
Underinflation is the single biggest cause of summer blowouts. Not potholes, not road debris — a tire that has quietly been running 12 psi low since May.
- Cold means cold. Check first thing in the morning, before the rig moves and before the sun is on the tires. A tire sitting in direct August sun for two hours already reads high.
- Never bleed a hot tire down. A 10 to 15 psi rise after an hour at highway speed on a hot day is normal and designed for. Letting that air out leaves you badly underinflated the moment things cool — which is precisely the condition that destroys tires.
- Inflate for weight, not for the sticker. The door sticker assumes how the manufacturer thought you'd load it. Take the rig across a CAT scale loaded the way you actually travel, get per-axle weights, then use your tire maker's load and inflation table to find the pressure supporting the heaviest wheel position on that axle. Run every tire on the axle at that number.
- Most trailer tires want max sidewall pressure. Trailer axles load unevenly in turns and have almost no suspension travel, so the standard guidance from ST tire makers is to run the max cold pressure stamped on the sidewall.
- Check your valve stems. Rubber snap-in stems are rated to roughly 65 psi. Plenty of 16-inch ST and LT tires call for 80. That mismatch is a real failure point and it's invisible until it isn't. Metal bolt-in stems solve it for a few dollars each.
Read the date code before you look at the tread
RV tires age out long before they wear out. A trailer that covers 3,000 miles a year will oxidize and crack from the inside out while the tread stays deep.
Every tire carries a DOT code on the sidewall ending in four digits: the first
two are the week, the last two are the year. 2822 means the 28th week of 2022.
If you only find a partial code, check the inboard sidewall.
The working rule most techs use: replace ST trailer tires at five to seven years regardless of appearance, and motorhome tires at about seven, with annual professional inspection after year five and replacement by year ten at the outside. A rig parked uncovered in Arizona sun ages faster than one stored under a roof in Oregon — the calendar is a floor, not a promise.
While you're down there, add up the load capacity of the tires on each axle and compare it to the axle's rating. A lot of trailers leave the factory with less than 10 percent margin, which is why bumping to a higher load range is the most common upgrade owners make after their first failure.
Two more things kill parked tires: petroleum-based dressings, which accelerate sidewall cracking (use a water-based protectant), and sitting in one spot for months. Cover the tires and roll the rig a few feet every month. Fine cracks between the tread blocks or in the sidewall are the visible warning; cracks deep enough to expose cord mean that tire is done today.
The five-minute stop routine that catches a failure early
Do this at every fuel stop, not just at the start of a trip.
- Walk all of them. You're looking for a bulge, a cut, a greasy shine, or rubber crumbs on the ground behind a wheel.
- Check hub temperature, not just tire temperature. An infrared thermometer costs $25. A hub running 40 to 50°F hotter than its mates means a dragging brake or a failing bearing — both of which cook the tire next to them. Bearings almost always show up as heat before they show up as noise.
- Read TPMS trends, not just alarms. A tire eight psi below the others, or running 20 degrees hotter than the one across from it, is telling you something well before it crosses an alarm threshold. An aftermarket TPMS is the best safety money an RV owner can spend.
- Re-torque your lug nuts after the first 50 miles following any wheel removal, to the spec in your manual.
And if one does let go: hold the wheel firmly with both hands, stay off the brakes, hold or add a little throttle for a beat to pull everything straight, then ease off and coast to the shoulder. Braking hard mid-blowout is what turns a ruined tire into a jackknifed trailer. Once stopped, get everyone out the non-traffic side and well away from the rig.
When to call a pro
A blowout is rarely just a tire. At highway speed the carcass whips up into the wheel well and takes out whatever is there — the coroplast underbelly, PEX water lines, the wiring harness and tank sensor leads, the fender skirt, sometimes a slide-out floor or an awning arm. You can be rolling again on the spare in 40 minutes and still be soaking insulation for the next 300 miles.

My tires have great tread but they're eight years old. Do I really need to replace them? Yes. Tread wear and age failure are unrelated. Eight-year-old trailer tires on a 1,000-mile August trip through the desert are the highest-risk setup there is.
Should I let some air out before driving on hot pavement? No — this is the most dangerous myth in RVing. Lower pressure means more sidewall flex, which means more heat. Set cold pressure correctly and let it rise.
Can I mix brands across my trailer axles? Match size, load range, and inflation pressure across each axle, and never mix bias-ply and radial on the same axle. Different brands front-to-back on a tandem are tolerable; mismatches side-to-side are not.
Is a full-size spare worth the weight? On anything you tow into remote country in summer, yes — plus a torque wrench and a jack rated for your loaded weight. Roadside tire service in the desert can be a three-hour wait.
