RV Refrigerator Not Cooling in Summer Heat? Here's What's Actually Wrong

Late-July heat pushes absorption RV fridges past their limit. How to tell a heat-starved fridge from a failed cooling unit — and the airflow fixes that work.

It's the last week of July, the pavement outside Phoenix is reading 112 degrees, and the fridge that held 38 all spring is now sitting at 52 with the milk going off. Nothing changed. No error code, no smell, no noise. It just quit keeping up.

This is one of the most common calls we get in late summer, and the frustrating part is that about half the time the refrigerator isn't broken at all — it's being asked to do something it physically cannot do in that heat. The other half of the time it is failing, and the heat just exposed it. Knowing which one you have is the difference between a $40 fan kit and a $1,800 cooling unit.

Why absorption fridges fall apart above 90 degrees

Most RVs built before roughly 2018 — and plenty since — use an absorption refrigerator (Dometic or Norcold) rather than a compressor. There is no compressor, no refrigerant pump, no moving part in the cooling circuit at all. A propane flame or a 120-volt heating element boils a mix of ammonia, water, and hydrogen in a sealed steel tube, and the vapor cycle carries heat out of the box and dumps it into the condenser fins behind your outside vent.

That's the whole catch: the heat has to go somewhere, and the only place it goes is into the air passing over those fins. An absorption fridge can pull the box roughly 45 to 60 degrees below the temperature of the air behind it. Do the math on a July afternoon. If the sun is baking that sidewall and the air inside the refrigerator compartment is 115 degrees — which is common, because the compartment is an oven with a vent — your best possible box temperature is in the high 50s. The fridge is working exactly as designed and still spoiling food.

Compressor fridges (12-volt "residential style," now standard on many newer rigs) don't have this ceiling. They pull down hard in any ambient temp. If you have one and it's not cooling, skip ahead — that's an electrical or sealed-system problem, not a heat-soak problem.

Rule out the five things that mimic heat failure

Before you spend a dime, work through these in order. Each takes a few minutes.

  1. Check both energy modes. Run it on propane for two hours, then on shore power for two hours, with a thermometer in the box. If it cools acceptably on one and not the other, the cooling unit is fine — you have a failed 120V heating element (typically 325 watts, tests around 40–50 ohms; an open circuit means replace it) or a propane problem: partially clogged burner orifice, mud dauber nest in the burner tube, or weak regulator pressure. If it's equally bad on both, the fault is downstream in the cooling unit or airflow.
  2. Look at the freezer. A healthy absorption fridge frosts the freezer evaporator plate first and hardest. Hard-frozen freezer, warm fresh-food compartment usually means an airflow or thermistor issue inside the box, not a dead cooling unit.
  3. Find the thermistor. It's the small bead sensor clipped to a fin on the fresh-food cooling plate. If it's slipped off, sitting against the wall, or buried behind food, the control board reads wrong and never calls for more cooling. Reseating it fixes more "warm fridge" complaints than any other single thing.
  4. Confirm you're level. Absorption cooling depends on liquid flowing by gravity through the tubes. More than about 3 degrees off level for hours at a time — a common boondocking situation — causes sluggish cooling, and repeated severe off-level operation is what permanently kills these units by letting sodium chromate sediment settle and block the boiler tube.
  5. Open the outside vents and look. Cardboard, a wasp nest, cottonwood fluff packed into the condenser fins, or a missing baffle behind the fins will choke convection completely. Clean the fins with a soft brush and compressed air, not a pressure washer.

The airflow fixes that actually move the needle

If the fridge checks out mechanically and it's simply losing to the heat, you're solving an air problem, and there's a real hierarchy of what works:

  • A thermostatic vent fan is the highest-value upgrade, by a wide margin. A pair of 12V fans mounted at the top of the compartment, wired to a snap-disc thermostat that closes around 90–110°F, pulls hot air out of the upper vent instead of letting it stall. Kits run $30–$70; a mobile tech installing one typically charges $150–$300 total. Expect 5–10 degrees of improvement in the box on a hot day. That's usually the whole gap.
  • Verify the baffle is present. There should be a sheet-metal or foil baffle forcing incoming air from the lower vent to travel across the condenser and boiler before exiting the upper vent. Many rigs left the factory with a sloppy one, and plenty have had it removed during past service and never replaced.
  • Shade the fridge sidewall. Park so the refrigerator side faces away from afternoon sun, or run the awning over it. A shaded sidewall can drop compartment air temp 15 degrees or more — free, and bigger than most gadgets.
  • Add a small battery or USB fan inside the box to circulate air across the fins. Cheap, and it evens out the stratification that leaves the bottom shelf 15 degrees warmer than the top.
  • Pre-chill and don't overload. Load already-cold food, start the fridge 24 hours before a trip, keep the freezer full for thermal mass, and accept that a hot case of drinks put in at noon in July drags the whole box up for the rest of the day.

The signs it's genuinely failed

Some symptoms mean stop troubleshooting and get a tech out:

  • A sharp ammonia or "cat urine" smell at the outside vent or inside the RV. That's a cracked cooling unit venting its charge. It cannot be recharged in the field — the unit gets replaced or the whole fridge does.
  • Yellow or greenish-yellow powdery residue streaking down the boiler tube or on the floor of the compartment. Same story: sodium chromate that leaked out with the ammonia. Confirmed failure.
  • A gurgling or sloshing sound followed by no cooling on either mode, often after a long off-level stretch — classic sediment blockage in the boiler.
  • Scorching, discoloration, or charring anywhere on the boiler tube or insulation. Absorption fridges have a real fire history (both major brands have been through recalls). Any burn evidence means shut it off at the propane and the breaker and stop using it now.

When to call a pro

Call if you smell ammonia, see yellow residue or any heat damage, if the fridge fails on both propane and 120V after the checks above, or if you're facing propane work — burner, orifice, gas line, regulator — that you're not equipped to leak-test. How cold should an RV absorption fridge get in summer? Aim for 35–40°F in the fresh-food compartment and 0–10°F in the freezer. On a 100°F+ day with a well-vented, correctly functioning unit, mid-40s is realistic. Consistently above 45°F means something is wrong or airflow needs help.

Does running on propane cool better than electric? Often, yes. The propane flame usually delivers more heat to the boiler than a 325W element, so many owners see a few degrees better performance on gas in extreme heat. If the difference is dramatic, though, suspect a weak electric element rather than crediting the propane.

Can I just add a fan and skip the repair? If the unit is mechanically sound and simply losing to ambient heat, yes — a vent fan kit is the correct fix. If it's failing on both energy sources or showing ammonia signs, a fan only delays a replacement.

How long should a cooling unit last? Ten to eighteen years is typical. Chronic off-level operation and blocked vents shorten it substantially.
