Most rooftop RV air conditioners don't die in a dramatic failure — they slowly lose their bite. The unit still hums, still blows air, but by mid-afternoon in July the inside of the rig is 88 degrees and climbing. Nine times out of ten that's not a dead compressor. It's a summer's worth of neglected maintenance: a coil packed with cottonwood fluff, a filter you've never cleaned, and a run capacitor that's quietly weakening.

- Use a stable ladder and check the roof will hold you. Know your roof type. Walkable roofs are usually fine; some smaller trailers have roofs you should not stand on — spread your weight across the rafters or work from the ladder.

Step 1 — Clean or replace the return-air filter
This is the single highest-value five minutes in the whole list, and it happens inside the coach. Pop the interior ceiling shroud (usually two thumb-wheels or tabs) and pull the foam or mesh filter. If it's gray with dust, it's been starving the unit of airflow — and low airflow makes the evaporator coil freeze into a block of ice, which feels exactly like "the AC stopped cooling."
Wash a foam filter in warm soapy water, let it dry fully, and reinstall. Replace it outright once a season if it's crumbling. Never run the AC with the filter out — dust goes straight onto the evaporator coil.
Step 2 — Clean both coils on the roof
Lift the outer plastic shroud (typically four to six screws). Now you can see the two coils:
- The condenser coil (outer, near the fan) dumps heat outside. In cottonwood country or after a dusty stay, its fins clog solid.
- The evaporator coil (inner) is what cools your cabin air.
Gently brush debris off the fins, then rinse from the back side with a garden hose on a light spray — never a pressure washer, which folds the soft aluminum fins flat. Bent fins block airflow; a cheap fin comb straightens the worst runs. A coil that can finally breathe often recovers 5–10 degrees of cooling on its own.
Step 3 — Inspect the roof gasket
Between the AC's base and the roof sits a foam gasket, compressed by the bolts inside. Over years of sun and vibration it hardens, shrinks, and starts to leak — which shows up as a water stain on your ceiling near the AC after a rainstorm, often mistaken for a roof leak.
Check the mounting-bolt torque from inside (snug, not gorilla-tight — usually around 40–60 in-lb; overtightening crushes the gasket). If the gasket looks flattened, cracked, or you've had water intrusion, plan to replace it. That's a job where you're lifting the whole unit slightly, and it's a fair line at which to bring in a pro.
Step 4 — Test the run capacitor (the usual killer)
If your AC hums but the compressor or fan won't spin, or it cools weakly on hot days, the run capacitor is the prime suspect. It's a small cylindrical or oval part in the electrical box, and it's the single most common rooftop-AC failure — a cheap part that fails from heat and age.
This is the pro line for most owners. A capacitor stores a dangerous charge even after power is off, and testing it means a multimeter with a capacitance setting and knowing how to safely discharge it first. If you're trained, you're comparing the reading against the microfarad (µF) rating printed on the side — out of spec means replace. If you're not, this is a five-minute job for a tech and not worth the shock risk. Step 5 — Check the fan, drains, and shroud
- Spin the fan by hand (power off). It should turn freely with no grinding or wobble. A dry motor bearing whines and eventually seizes.
- Clear the condensate drain paths in the base pan so water sheds off the roof instead of pooling and finding a seam.
- Reinstall the outer shroud and confirm it isn't cracked. A sun-brittled shroud that blows off at highway speed exposes the coils to rain and road debris — replace a cracked one before it fails.
Step 6 — Run it and measure the temperature drop
Reassemble, restore power, and run the AC on high-cool for 15 minutes. Hold a thermometer at the return-air grille, then at the supply vent. A healthy rooftop unit produces roughly an 18–22°F drop between the two. Much less than that after you've cleaned everything points to low airflow still, a weak capacitor, or a sealed-system refrigerant problem — and rooftop RV ACs are not field- recharged, so a true refrigerant fault means the unit gets swapped, not topped off.
