RV Furnace Blows Cold Air? Work the Ignition Sequence in Order
A furnace that runs the fan but never heats is almost always voltage, airflow, or a nest in the burner tube — here's how to find where the sequence stops.

It's 41 degrees at the campsite, you bump the thermostat, and the furnace does exactly what it's supposed to do — for about forty seconds. The blower spins up, you wait for the whoomp of the burner lighting, and it never comes. A minute later the fan quits and the whole thing starts over.
Almost every "blows cold air" call is one of four things: low battery voltage, a blocked airflow path, no propane reaching the burner, or a burner tube full of insect nest. The good news is that an RV furnace runs the same rigid startup sequence every single time, and where it stops tells you which one you have.
Know the sequence — it tells you where to look
Nearly all RV furnaces (Suburban NT-series, Atwood/Dometic AFMD, and their cousins) are direct-spark ignition units driven by one control board. When you call for heat, this happens in order:
- The thermostat closes and sends 12 volts to the module board.
- The blower motor starts and runs a pre-purge, typically 15 to 45 seconds. Nothing else can happen until it finishes.
- Air moving through the combustion side closes the sail switch — a light metal flap that physically proves the blower is spinning fast enough.
- The limit switch must also be closed (it's a thermal switch that opens if the heat exchanger is overheating).
- Only then does the board open the gas valve and fire the igniter electrode. You'll hear rapid clicking.
- The flame lights and the board senses it, on most units through that same electrode. No flame sensed within roughly 7 to 10 seconds and the valve shuts. After two or three failed tries the board hard-locks out until you cycle the thermostat off and back on.
So: no blower at all is a thermostat, fuse, or motor problem. Blower runs but you never hear clicking is stopping at step 3 or 4. Clicking but no flame is step 5. Flame that lights and dies after a few seconds is step 6.
It blows air but never clicks: voltage and airflow
Start with voltage, because it causes more furnace complaints than every mechanical fault combined. An RV furnace blower is the biggest 12-volt load in the coach — 7 to 10 amps while running. Most control boards want to see at least 10.5 volts at the board, under load, and a battery that reads a healthy 12.6 volts at rest can sag well below that the instant the blower spins.
This is why furnaces fail at 3 a.m. on the third night of boondocking and work fine the next afternoon on shore power. A slow blower doesn't push enough air to close the sail switch, so the board never gets permission to light. If voltage is solid under load, chase airflow:
- Return air grille. It's usually a louvered panel on the furnace itself or a nearby cabinet kick plate. Bedding, a duffel bag, or a stack of towels leaning against it will starve the blower. Give it several inches of clear space.
- Closed floor registers. Owners close registers in unused rooms to "push heat" elsewhere. Close too many and you restrict the discharge side enough to trip the limit switch. Leave them all open.
- Crushed or disconnected ducting. Flex duct pops off its collar under the floor or gets pinched behind a drawer slide. If one register blows hard and another blows nothing, you've found it.
- The exterior sidewall vent. That's combustion air in and exhaust out. Mud daubers, spiderweb, and road debris block it. It must be clear.
A furnace that lights, heats for a few minutes, then blows cold and re-lights is the classic limit switch cycle — it's making heat faster than the air can carry it away. That is almost always restricted airflow, and running it that way cooks the heat exchanger.
It clicks or lights and drops out: the gas side
Clicking means the board is trying. Prove propane is actually arriving before you condemn anything electrical: light a stovetop burner. If the stove lights and burns a steady blue, you have gas at the manifold.
- Air in the line. After a refill or a tank swap, it can take 20 to 30 seconds of a stovetop burner running to purge air out. Furnaces are much less tolerant of that air than a stove is.
- The OPD lockout. Fill a cylinder too fast, or open the valve too fast, and the excess-flow feature in the tank valve throttles down to a trickle — enough for a stove, not enough for a 30,000 BTU furnace. Close the valve, wait a minute, and reopen it slowly.
- A tired regulator. Two-stage regulators are wear items with a service life of roughly 10 to 15 years, and a weak one shows up first on the largest appliance. - A nest in the burner tube. This is the single most common no-heat cause on a rig that sat for a season. Mud daubers pack the burner tube and orifice solid. The symptom is clicking with no light, or a yellow, lazy, sooty flame. Cleaning it means pulling the burner assembly, which is a job for someone who will leak-test the gas connections afterward.
Lights, then dies after 7 to 10 seconds every time? That's flame sensing. The electrode is carboned up, its ceramic insulator is cracked, its gap has drifted from the factory spec (usually around an eighth of an inch), or the board's ground has corroded. A furnace can genuinely be burning fine and still shut itself off because it can't prove it to itself.
The line you don't cross
Two symptoms mean shut the furnace off at the thermostat and leave it off until a tech has looked at it.
Soot, a yellow flame, or any smell of exhaust inside the coach. RV furnaces are sealed-combustion — burner and exhaust are isolated from your living space. A crack or a rusted seam in the heat exchanger puts carbon monoxide where you sleep. It is not repairable; a compromised exchanger means a new furnace.
A CO alarm that sounds while the furnace runs. Get everyone out and ventilate first, ask questions second. And check the date on that detector — RV CO alarms expire in five to seven years.
Never use the stovetop or oven as a heat source in a closed RV. Those are unvented appliances that dump combustion products straight into the cabin.
When to call a pro
Call when the burner tube needs cleaning, when the gas valve or regulator is suspect, or when the fix requires breaking a propane connection — those joints have to be soap-tested afterward, and a leak inside a wall cavity is not a mistake you get a second chance at. Call for any sooting, any exhaust odor, or a heat exchanger you can't see behind. Call if the furnace short-cycles after you've cleared every airflow restriction you can find, because a limit switch that trips on good airflow is a failing switch or a failing blower motor.

Why does my furnace work on shore power but not on battery? Because the converter is holding voltage up for you. On battery alone the bank sags under the blower's draw and the sail switch never closes. Test your batteries under load — that's the actual fault.
What is the sail switch, and can I just bypass it? It's a flap that proves the blower is moving enough air before gas is allowed to flow. Do not jumper it. Bypassing it lets the furnace fire with no airflow, which is how heat exchangers crack.
How much propane does a furnace actually burn? A 30,000 BTU furnace burns roughly a third of a gallon per hour while it's firing. Overnight in freezing weather, expect a 20-pound bottle to last two to three nights of heavy cycling.
