RV Awning Won't Retract? Check the Switch, the Motor, and the Arms — Then Get It In by Hand
A power awning that won't roll in is a trip-ender. How to trace it from the wall switch to the motor, spot mechanical binding, and retract it manually so you can leave.

Checkout is at eleven, the rig is hitched, and the awning is still hanging over the picnic table. You hold the switch and get a click, a hum, or nothing at all. A power awning that won't retract is one of the few RV failures that physically stops you from leaving, which is why it produces more panicked calls than problems costing ten times as much.
This guide covers the powered awnings on most rigs built in the last fifteen years — Lippert Solera, Carefree Eclipse and Travel'r, Dometic 9100 Power and their relatives. If you have an older manual spring-assist awning that won't roll up, skip to the section on calling a pro: a charged torsion spring is not a campsite repair. For everyone else, work the problem in this order, because the cheap causes come first.
Start at the switch and the 12 volts behind it
A power awning is a simple DC circuit: battery, fuse, wall switch, motor. Most "dead awning" calls never get past the first three.
- Is anything happening at all? Press extend as well as retract. If it moves one direction and not the other, jump to the next section — that's a switch or wiring problem, not a dead motor.
- Check the fuse. The awning has its own fuse in the 12-volt panel, usually 15 or 20 amps. A hairline break is easy to miss, so swap in a known-good fuse of the same rating rather than trusting your eyes.
- Check the battery under load. An awning motor pulls heavy current for a few seconds, and a bank sitting at 11.8 volts will hum and stall where a charged one rolls the fabric in without complaint. Plug into shore power or start the engine and try again. - Look for an interlock. Many motorhomes won't run the awning with the ignition on, and a few trailers wire it through the battery disconnect.
- Test the switch itself. Most wall switches are momentary rockers that fail in one direction first. Pull the switch out of the wall and meter the terminals while a helper presses each side. Twelve volts arriving and nothing leaving in the retract position means the switch is done. It's a cheap part and the most common real fault on a Solera.
Extends but won't retract, or hums and quits: the motor and its wiring
A DC awning motor reverses by reversing polarity. The switch sends positive to one lead for extend and to the other for retract, so a motor that runs one way has a working motor, fuse, and battery. What it doesn't have is a clean circuit in the retract direction — one half of the switch, or one of the two wires running down the arm to the motor.
On a Solera and most in-tube motors, the harness runs inside the motor-side arm and joins the coach wiring at a plug near the bottom of that arm or just inside the sidewall. That connector lives outdoors, sees every rainstorm, and is the second most common failure after the switch. Unplug it, look for green corrosion, clean it, and reconnect.
The definitive test is to feed the motor directly. With the connector unplugged, run two jumper leads from a 12-volt source to the two motor pins. If the awning moves, swap the leads and it moves the other way. An awning that retracts on jumpers has a switch or wiring fault upstream; one that hums, clicks, or stays silent on jumpers has a motor problem.
Two things before you condemn the motor. Most have a thermal cutoff, so if you've been cycling it back and forth chasing the problem, give it fifteen minutes to cool and try once more. And a motor that hums without turning may be a seized gearbox, or it may be fabric or arms binding — the next section.
Replacing an in-tube motor means pulling the roller assembly off the arms, so it isn't a campsite job. The part is cheap; the labor is what you pay for, and we priced it in what RV awning repair costs.
It moves, then stops, binds, or rolls in crooked: mechanical trouble
If the motor is clearly trying, stop pressing the switch and look at what it's fighting. Forcing a bound awning is how a $150 problem becomes a bent roller tube.
- Water in the fabric. A pocket of rainwater mid-awning weighs far more than the motor is sized for. Push the pooled section up from below with a broom handle to drain it, then try again.
- The polycord jumped the rail. The bead sewn into the fabric edge slides in a track along the sidewall. If a section has popped out, the fabric bunches on one end and the tube stalls or rolls crooked. Look along the rail for a gap; sometimes it feeds back in, sometimes the rail is bent and won't.
- One arm lags the other. Solera arms use internal springs; many Carefree models use gas struts. When one side is weak or bent from a low-branch strike, the tube racks and jams a few inches from home. Sight along both arms from the end — a quarter-inch bend is enough.
Getting it in by hand so you can leave
Every powered awning has a manual retraction procedure, and it's in the manual for your exact model — the brand and model number are on the end cap or a sticker on the motor-side arm. Broadly, there are two designs:
- A mechanical override at the motor. Some units have a hex drive or a release cover on the motor end of the roller tube that lets you roll the awning in with a wrench or a drill. If yours does, that's the clean way home.
- Disconnect and push. On many in-tube designs, including most Soleras, you unplug the motor at the arm connector and walk the arms in by hand, one person per side, while the fabric rolls onto the tube.
Before either one, pull the awning fuse so the motor can't fire while your hands are in the mechanism.
Once it's in, it will not stay in on its own. The motor's gearbox is what normally holds a power awning closed, and an unplugged or failed motor has no grip. Run a ratchet strap around the roller tube and through the arm bracket at each end and cinch them snug. An awning that unfurls at 65 mph takes the arms and part of the sidewall with it. Drive slowly and directly to a place it can be fixed.
When to call a pro
- Any manual spring-assist awning that won't roll up. The torsion spring stores enough energy to break a wrist and needs to be unloaded and reset by someone who has done it before.
- A bent roller tube, bent arm, or lifted awning rail. A tube out of straight never rolls evenly again, and a rail pulling away from the sidewall is a water-intrusion problem first and an awning problem second.
- Replacing an in-tube motor. The roller assembly has to come off the arms, which takes two people and the right supports.
- You can't get it in and you have a departure time. A mobile tech comes to the site — a very different day than nursing a hanging awning to a shop that can see you in two weeks.

FAQ
Why does my awning extend but not retract? Because the motor is fine. Extend and retract are the same motor with the polarity flipped, so a one-direction failure is almost always the retract half of the wall switch or one corroded wire in the arm harness. Test the switch before you buy a motor.
Can I drive with the awning strapped closed? A short distance, slowly, yes — that's what the straps are for. Strap both ends of the roller tube, check them at every stop, and stay off the interstate.
Why does my awning retract by itself when nobody touched it? That's the wind sensor or auto-retract feature, which on Carefree and Dometic units lives in the motor-side arm or the control module. A sensor that trips in calm air is failing and can be disabled or replaced. It's a different fault from an awning that won't retract at all.
